According to the 2021 NJ Department of Agriculture Annual Report and Agricultural Statistics, 303,000 farmland acres, or 40%, grow conventionally produced commodity crops (grain and silage corn, hay, soybeans, and winter wheat). Common practice is to grow commodity crops using chemical fertilizers, pesticides, and herbicides that degrade soils, pollute waterways and negatively impact food safety.
In response to this situation, the Foodshed Alliance advocates for #sustainable, #regenerative agricultural practices that promote human and ecosystem health while achieving a sustainable livelihood for farmers.
Value-added grain production provides #NJHighlands regional growers with an opportunity to significantly increase farm profitability and enhance agroecosystem function. “Exotic” grains, such as the ancient wheats varieties - einkorn, emmer, and spelt, are in increasing demand by consumers, and currently fetch high retail prices.
This project is funded by the NJ Highlands Council Sustainable Agriculture Grant. For more information, go to https://foodshedalliance.org/projects...
