Demak Regency(Javanese: Hanacaraka: ꦢꦼꦩꦏ꧀ Pegon: دمك, translit. Dêmak) is a regency located in Central Java province, Indonesia. The capital is Demak Kota Sub-district, the district is bordered by the Java Sea to the west, Jepara Regency to the north, Kudus Regency to the east, Grobogan Regency to the southeast, and Semarang City and Semarang Regency to the west. Demak Regency has an area of 897.43 km² and a population of 1,158,772 people(2019)[1].
"Demak" comes from the Arabic word "Dhima" which means swamp. This is because the land in Demak is former swamp land, aka mud land. Even now, during the rainy season the Demak area is often inundated with water, and during the dry season the soil cracks a lot, because of the former swamp, aka mud soil. Because Demak's soil is unstable, the highways that are built are easily damaged, therefore the highways in Demak use concrete.
Demak Regency is one of the regencies in Central Java located at 6°43'26"-7°09'43" LS and 110°27'58"-110°48'47" East and located about 25 km east of Semarang City. Demak is traversed by National Route 1 (pantura) which connects Jakarta-Semarang-Surabaya-Banyuwangi.

Semarang City (Javanese: Hanacaraka: ꦯꦼꦩꦫꦁ, Pegon: سماراڠ) is the capital of Central Java province, Indonesia. It is the fifth largest metropolitan city in Indonesia after Jakarta, Surabaya, Bandung and Medan. As one of the growing cities on the island of Java, Semarang City has a population of around 1.6 million.[6] The mega-urban area of Semarang incorporated in the Kedungsepur metropolitan area (Kendal Regency, Demak Regency, Ungaran Semarang Regency, Salatiga City, Semarang City, and Purwodadi Grobogan Regency) has a population of 7.3 million, as well as the fourth most populated metropolitan area in Indonesia, after Jabodetabek (Jakarta), Gerbangkertosusilo (Surabaya), and Greater Bandung (Bandung). In recent years, Semarang's significant development has been marked by the emergence of several skyscrapers scattered across the city and the structuring of the city with the construction of pedestrian-friendly places. These regional developments demonstrate Semarang's strategic role in the national economy.
Semarang is led by mayor Hevearita Gunaryanti Rahayu. The city is located about 498 km east of Jakarta, or 312 km west of Surabaya, or 621 km southwest of Banjarmasin (by air). Semarang borders the Java Sea to the north, Demak Regency to the east, Semarang Regency to the south, and Kendal Regency to the west. Semarang City has an administrative area of 373.70 square kilometers, and is the largest municipal administration in Java.
Etymologically, the name "Semarang" comes from the word "asem", meaning "sour/tamarind tree", and the word "arang", meaning "rare", which is combined into "rare sour". The naming of "Semarang" began when Ki Ageng Pandanaran I came to an island called Tirang Island (near Bergota harbor) and saw a rare sour tree growing close together. The naming of Semarang City was changed during the Dutch East Indies colonialism era to "Samarang". Semarang City was one of three important port centers (Jakarta and Surabaya) for the Dutch East Indies as a supplier of crops from the interior of Java.
Like other big cities, Semarang City recognizes a city division system consisting of: Central Semarang, East Semarang, South Semarang, West Semarang, and North Semarang. The division of the city began with the Dutch East Indies government's division of sub-resident areas, which were equivalent to sub-districts. Today, however, the city division is different from the administrative division of the sub-district. Although the city division is rarely used within the Semarang city government. However, the city division is used to make it easier to describe a location in relation to the city center of Semarang. The city division is also used by several agencies within Semarang to facilitate service coverage, such as PLN and PDAM.
