What a way to end the game. This relentless monster of a game culminates in an extremely satisfying and perfectly difficult final boss. In this fight we are introduced to an Ikaruga polarity gimmick that feels a little underutilized, but is still interesting.
The first phase is pretty negligible after some practice, but it still needs to be completed every time for a shot at the harder parts. It gets irritating, but it's relatively short.
The second phase is where the real meat of the challenge lies. There are 10 different attacks that come in a random sequence, but all must be survived to reach the final form. From easiest to hardest, I'd rate them:
Miracle ⭢ Wind ⭢ Frozen ⭢ Flame ⭢ Insects ⭢ Earth ⭢ Darkness ⭢ Aqua ⭢ Insanity ⭢ Rainbow
It takes a lot of time to master them, but eventually I got pretty good at this section, as in being able to pass it a couple times in an hour.
The last phase is actually not that bad, but I seriously choked on it upwards of 40 times. It's embarrassing. It took me until the end of my 30+ hours of attempts to realize that the paths of the light and dark bullets are determined from your initial starting position. Once I was aware of this, much of the panic from this part was alleviated and I was able to triumph in the end.
I did it. I beat it. It's over. My final time was 402 hours.
I've always been enticed by difficult games, but whenever I see a top list it's always the same culprits. Dark Souls, Battletoads, Super Meat Boy, etc. I don't trust any list that calls the original Contra a hard game. But THIS. THIS is true difficulty. Sure the Dark Souls games are fun, but none of the bosses will take me more than an hour.
True brutally niche difficulty is hard to find. But it's out there. There's Mario Maker, Geometry Dash, and fan games. These I've found have communities trying to make the hardest humanly possible video game experiences. Kamilia 3 isn't necessarily trying to be the hardest thing imaginable, but it offers an appropriately Sisyphean struggle that awards sheer persistence with a profound sense of accomplishment. I Wanna Kill the Kamilia 3 is the hardest game I've beaten and probably will ever beat. It's great. I wouldn't recommend it to anyone.
There's still more to the game, some of it far beyond my ability. But I need a break before I even consider tackling it.
