The full rules are as follows...

$175 USD budget, if you are not in the US convert it to your local currency and you have that much to spend.

No knock off parts. No Ali express, alibaba, Amazon, temu, or anything of the sort. This is supposed to be a contest showing off what old bikes and parts can do. Buying parts online is okay just stick to reputable brands.

You’re totally allowed to use stuff from your parts bin, however you must assign a reasonable price to them. I’m personally using my local bike Co-op to reference for prices.

If you get a free bike from a buddy, put a price on it. Go wherever you usually get bikes and find something similar and price it at that. Some of us are lucky enough to have those free bike finds, but not everyone. We are trying to make the playing field as equal as possible for everyone.

Labor costs do not need to be applied to the final build cost. If you need a little help from your local bike shop, go for it! Put the parts cost in your final price, but you can skip the labor. We know that everyone might not have every tool they need, don’t be ashamed to get a little help :)

The build period will go from Feb 8- Feb 28. Voting will start on March 1st. It will be a similar bracket system we used last year. Hopefully things go a little smoother this time. 😂

When you are done with your bike, send photos and a cost breakdown list to [email protected] for official entry. Make sure to include your name and instagram! I will try to look at the #cheapbikebuildoff2026 but instagram has made it very difficult to search though hashtags and I want to make sure everyone’s bike gets seen!

Everyone is welcome to build a bike and enter. There will be some sort of trophy made for the winner.
