Today I spoke with Christa, who grew up in a non-denominational Christian church, but eventually deconverted as she saw the toxic beliefs and the mythology that it's based on.
We touched on many topics, including:
• Placing her faith in Jesus as a young child and then rededicating her life to Christ repeatedly to be sure it was genuine.
• How children who grow up in a Christian home are effectively taught to think that "god is speaking to you," when it's actually just their own thoughts and emotions.
• Being taught that Catholics weren't really Christians or saved, due to the religious differences, and effectively being taught to see Catholics as having a stigma.
• How religious superstition and magic thinking come out in the way Christians talk about symbolism, healings, prophecy.
• Being effectively taught that if something good happened in life, it was from Yahweh, and if something bad happened in life, it was from Satan.
• Believing that if you wanted something that wasn't happening, you needed to keep praying more and harder.
• Being instilled with a white nationalist perspective on history, during homeschooling.
• Being overly sheltered from anything "worldly."
• Being heavily indoctrinated into Christian fundamentalism.
• How Christians feel under attack all the time because they cannot handle their kids being exposed to the truth.
• Being raised to believe that there were angels and demons all around her at all times, so much that her mind tricked her into thinking she could see demons on the walls and ceiling of her home, but eventually realizing that it was just her imagination.
• How the mythology of Christianity instills messages of sin and shame in people and sets them up for lifelong guilt and sadness.
• How Christianity labels many childlike behaviors as "sins."
• Being labelled as "rebellious" for simply questioning the narrative, especially as a woman.
• How neurobehavioral disorders, such as ADHD, were not really considered acceptable diagnoses for Christians to consider.
• Being taught that you don't need medicine or counseling -- you just need Jesus and a better understanding the Gospel and your identity in Christ, or to "give it to god" in some way.
• The message to young girls to stay away from boys because "they only want one thing."
• Being taught to not "lust after your brothers in Christ" and to "protect their eyes and minds" by dressing modestly.
• Seeing homosexual people being shunned by the church.
• How Christianity conditions people to see their sexuality as bad, dirty, and deviant, and the ways that this dynamic even affects causes immense issues and suffering for married people.
• Never being encouraged to pursue a career or outside job because it was assumed that Christian women should only want to be a stay-at-home-mom.
• How fundamentalist Christianity indoctrinates women into patriarchy so intensely that women will actually fight for patriarchy and will tear down women who espouse feminism.
• The toxic mix of young people being told that they are sinful, that their bodily desires are sinful, to not do anything sexual, and at the same time teaching women that they are inherently stumbling blocks to the men.
• How Christianity encourages you to distance yourself from people who are not "godly."
• How cults use insidious tactics to invite, manipulate, isolate, and control their congregations, starting with love bombing.
• Realizing, through comparative mythology, that the Jesus character is not unique among the many dying and rising gods that have been invented throughout history.
• Realizing that the Yahweh character was once the husband of the goddess Asherah, and earlier, was the son of Elyon, but that the story has evolved repeatedly, in large part to counter the women's spiritual and cultural power.
• Understanding that our minds can "make" things seem true to us, even if they are not, especially if we are preconditioned and indoctrinated in that direction.
• Realizing, after deconversion, that every time you were praying, you were actually just conferring with yourself.
• How deconversion frees you to be the most authentic and best version of yourself possible, once you are free from a mythological worldview.
Thanks to Christa for sharing her story!
