Another set of trade war might just be brewing between the United States of America and Canada following Trump new tariff increase on aluminum. Canada has shockingly developed a four-way strategy different from what we've seen before to counter the U.S government's new tariffs. Don't forget to subscribe to our channel as you watch this video.
So, how did it all start? Let's rewind a bit.
In early 2025, Donald Trump’s administration increased tariffs on aluminum imports from 25% to 50%. The idea was to protect American aluminum smelters and save jobs in that industry. But a lot has happened since this new update by Donald Trump. Let's double down on that.
When Donald Trump’s administration announced that the U.S would raise tariffs on imported aluminum from 25% to 50%, it shocked both American industries and their trading partners like Canada. However, according to the U.S, the reason for this increase was to make foreign aluminum expensive so that American-made aluminum would appear cheaper.
In other words, we can say that this was presented as a way to “protect U.S. aluminum producers and jobs,” especially in states where aluminum smelting has declined for years due to competition from abroad.
With the look of things, things have not worked out that way. Yes, even experts warned that this move could backfire. They warned that the U.S produces far less aluminum than it consumes and as a result, other countries may want to take advantage of that.
Sad to say the experts were right. The U.S. imports more than 5 million metric tons of aluminum each year, while local production is less than 1 million metric tons. This means even with tariffs, American industries cannot fully rely on their domestic suppliers. They will still need imports especially from Canada, which is the U.S.’s biggest aluminum source.
With the way things are panning out, one would wonder; How essential is aluminum to the U.S?
Well, that's the right question to ask. The answer is simple: without aluminum, many modern industries in America and the rest of the world would struggle to function.
For instance, in the automotive industry, aluminum makes up about 15% of a car's total weight. This metal helps cars become more fuel-efficient and safer. In fact, Tesla and Ford both rely heavily on aluminum to reduce weight in their EVs. If aluminum prices rise, so does the cost of making cars, which can then raise the price of cars at dealerships.
The U.S defense industry also relies on aluminum. If you don't know, aluminum is used in making fighter jets and weapons. Any disruption in aluminum supply could raise costs and cause delays in the production of military equipment. For example, aircraft manufacturer Boeing depends on Canadian and imported aluminum for building aircraft. A sudden rise in costs could seriously affect the U.S security readiness to threats.
The housing and construction sector also depends heavily on aluminum for things like window frames, doors, roofing, and wiring. A tariff makes all these products more expensive, which means building your house or even renovating one could cost more. For the average American family, this would mean higher living costs.
