Mahatma Gandhi’s words about Assamese women “weaving dreams on their looms” come alive in Moran, Assam. Hemoprova Chutia, a master weaver from Dibrugarh district, has spent decades at her traditional handloom, but since 2013, her creations have taken a remarkable turn.
Beginning with the Bhagavad Gita, she painstakingly wove Sanskrit shlokas into cloth, later recreating the text in English. Every letter is formed by manually adjusting threads, with no printing, tools, or automation.
Honoured with the Padma Shri in 2023, Hemoprova says recognition was never her goal. Her latest and most ambitious project is weaving the 16th-century Assamese devotional text Naam Ghosa into English and Hindi, a work expected to stretch 600–700 ft and take several years to complete.
Despite not understanding English, Hindi, or Sanskrit, she reproduces each alphabet through careful observation. For her, letters are designs woven with discipline and devotion.
