Hello, ladies and gentlemen. Today I want to tell you about the benefits of taking notes with pen and paper in class or in other settings, and why I believe it is more beneficial than taking notes on a keyboard.
First of all, when we write by hand, we engage in a deeper cognitive process. Instead of only copying words down, as we take the time to write them out, we have to comprehend the meaning. We think critically about what we are hearing which makes it much easier to remember later.
But when we type we tend to take notes almost mechanically. Research shows us that this method is more akin to simply transcribing word for word without processing the material. This can lead to a shallow understanding of concepts, or to not recalling them at all.
Another reason why I believe pen and paper to be superior is their simplicity. With a laptop or tablet you need to take extra steps to make sure nothing distracts you. But on an empty notebook, there is nothing else to divert your attention. This focus can make all the difference when it comes to not missing any integral information.
On the other hand, it is true that if the speaker is speaking particularly fast, it can be difficult to capture all the words on paper. But with enough practice, I believe this will also be another reason to filter the information instead of copying it all.
