This is not our home that we have come to live in but we are sent on a mission to complete and to take something from here back to where we came from.
It is like a commando, a secret agent who is sent on a mission to another unfriendly country to bring back some secret or to complete a mission or whatever task is given.
Similarly we are sent here on the face of the earth, which is not friendly and full of booby traps and tests and different enemies. 
And we are supposed to discover and take back with us the pearl of the pleasure of Allah Subhana hu watala. That pearl is hidden in this world. Hidden behind the good deeds, and in the good deeds. Like in the ocean you see the pearls are hidden in the shell. A diver dives and tries to discover them.
Similarly good deeds are like the shells and the pearls in it are the: Closeness of Allah, pearl of pleasure of allah, pearl of Ma’rifah of Allah, love of Allah etc. What is the shell? The shell is the good deeds done In this Dunya. If a person cannot obtain or discover a pearl from the shell, the shell is valueless. The real thing is the pearl in the shell.
Similarly if you are doing some good deeds, but in those good deeds you are not in search of the pleasure of Allah through that good deed. Your motive is fame, name, glory, piety, approval of people, earning good name, then you have the shell only.
You wont be able to discover the pearl of the pleasure of Allah in there. On the day of judgment you will take many good deeds but they will be shells. They will be rejected.
People will say I have salah, I have hajj, I have umrah, I have zikr, I have dawah, I wrote so many books, I did that, I did that. Allah subhanahu watallah will say where is the pearl?
