Ancient DNA Reveals Mastodons Lived at Northern Tip of Greenland

Описание: Millions of fragments of DNA preserved in permafrost for over a million years reveal a thriving ecosystem of plants and animals at the northern tip of Greenland. Over a 100 billion bases of DNA sequences were extracted from permafrost soils laid down prior to the most recent Ice Ages. The sequences from those fragments were compared to sequences of living organisms to give us a detailed view of what types of organisms were alive long ago just 600 miles from the North Pole. They reveal the presence of over 100 different species of plants and animals. It was an area with meadows and tundra trees. Much of this was not a surprise but several locations revealed the presence of sequences that are most similar to Mastodons. Mastodons are extinct today but we already have large portions of its sequence generated from teeth found in other parts of the world. These mastodons may have been a different species or the ancestor of more recent mastodons. How did they get there? When did they live in Greenland? These are questions that if I were committed to a young-earth paradigm of earth's history would leave me befuddled and confused.
Here I talk about some of the findings in this new publication, talk about ancient DNA evidence and relate these topics to a discussion about post-flood migration and other challenges to the young-earth paradigm.
