The ongoing tensions in West Asia are not just affecting crude oil prices — they are also impacting fertilizer supply, which directly affects food production and prices.
India still depends heavily on imports for fertilizers. Around 50% of natural gas used for urea comes from Qatar, while key fertilizers like DAP and Potash are imported from countries like Saudi Arabia, Morocco, and Israel.
With disruptions in shipping routes like the Strait of Hormuz and rising crude oil prices, fertilizer production costs have increased globally. In March 2026 alone, fertilizer prices rose by nearly 20% in international markets.
To protect farmers, the Indian government is absorbing these costs through subsidies. However, this puts pressure on the economy, adding an estimated ₹20,000 crore burden.
To reduce dependency, India is now focusing on Nano Fertilizers, especially Nano Urea.
Unlike traditional urea, where only 30% is absorbed by crops, nano urea has an efficiency of over 80%, reducing waste and improving productivity. A 500ml nano urea bottle can replace a 45kg bag, significantly reducing transportation and storage costs.
India currently has 10+ nano urea plants, with a target of producing 44 crore bottles annually. If successful, this could drastically cut imports and save over ₹40,000 crore in foreign exchange every year.
This shift could be as transformative for agriculture as EVs are for fuel — a major step toward self-reliance in farming inputs.
