"At first glance, this looks like the Sun exploding with strange streaks of light across the sky. Many people assume effects like this are caused by clouds, camera artifacts, or even something unnatural.
In reality, what you are seeing here are shadows cast by distant mountain peaks during sunset. As the Sun drops low on the horizon, mountains tens of miles away can project long, narrow shadows upward through the atmosphere, creating dramatic streaks that appear to radiate from the Sun.
This effect is completely real, completely natural, and happens because of geometry, distance, and the angle of sunlight near sunset. Once you understand what’s actually causing it, the effect becomes even cooler.
I test and explain misunderstood visuals using real world observations and basic physics.
If something looks strange, it’s worth slowing down and figuring out why.
