The original “DESIRE – Passion” is one of Akina Nakamori’s most iconic songs, released in 1986 and a defining track of Japan’s music scene at the time. With its sharp-edged sound and overwhelming presence, the song has remained deeply etched in listeners’ memories for nearly four decades.
In this project, Newtro takes on the challenge of boldly reimagining the classic into a modern arrangement that transcends genres and generations. The reinterpretation is led by LE GRAND RETOUR, a unit that moves freely between jazz and electronic music, using saxophone and keyboards as their core instruments. By reconstructing the song’s exotic intensity, they create a daring soundscape that fuses minimalist rhythms, cutting-edge electronic textures, and jazz-inspired improvisation. Pulsing low frequencies and tension-filled saxophone lines reveal “DESIRE” from an entirely new angle.
Vocals are performed by Ikkyu Nakajima (tricot / Genie High). While honoring the power of the original melody, she takes an unconventional approach by translating its intensity into a delicate whisper-like delivery, expressing a new form of passion that seeps from within. Her voice—both supple and sharp—stands out amid the intersection of electronic and jazz elements, shaping a truly distinctive sonic world.
Born from the experimental spirit of LE GRAND RETOUR and Ikkyu Nakajima’s profound expressiveness, Newtro’s take on “DESIRE” brings a timeless masterpiece back to life—now reborn in a completely new form.

原曲「DESIRE -情熱-」は、1986年にリリースされた中森明菜の代表曲で、当時の日本の音楽シーンを牽引した名曲。
エッジの効いたサウンドと強烈な存在感を持つこの楽曲は、約40年を経た今でも多くのリスナーの記憶に深く刻まれ続けています。
今回Newtroが挑んだのは、この名曲を “ジャンルや世代を超えて響くモダンなアレンジへと大胆に生まれ変わらせること”。
その再解釈を担ったのは、サックスと鍵盤を武器にジャズとエレクトロを横断するユニット
LE GRAND RETOUR。
原曲のエキゾチックな高揚感をあえて再構成し、ミニマルなリズム、鋭利なエレクトロの質感、ジャズ的な即興性を融合させた挑戦的なサウンドへと仕上げました。
静かに燃え続ける低音の脈動や、緊張感あるサックスのフレーズが、「DESIRE」が持つ情熱をまったく新しい角度から浮かび上がらせています。
ボーカルを務めるのは、中嶋イッキュウ（tricot／ジェニーハイ）。
原曲の力強いメロディを尊重しながらも、熱量をウィスパーボイスへと繊細に置き換えた挑戦的なアプローチによって、感情を内側からにじませるような新たな“情熱”の表現に挑んでいます。
エレクトロとジャズが交錯するサウンドの中で、イッキュウの声が持つしなやかさと鋭さが際立ち、唯一無二の世界観を形成しています。
