Kaifeng was once the capital of China during the Northern Song Dynasty.
Today, it’s a quiet city rarely visited by foreign tourists.
In this video, I travel by bus and train to Kaifeng and walk through the former imperial palace grounds.
The journey starts in the mountains near Shaolin then on to Dengfeng, with a bus transfer in Zhengzhou, before arriving by train in Kaifeng. After walking through the city and along its waterways, I approach Longting Park, the reconstructed site of Kaifeng’s former imperial palace.
Kaifeng was once one of the most important cities in the world, but flooding from the Yellow River and shifting capitals slowly pushed it into obscurity. Today, it remains one of China’s most underrated former capitals.
