We study how to move particles with light to make medicines safer! 💡
I am Iago Diez, a researcher at the Nanophotonics Technology Center (UPV). My work focuses on a fundamental challenge for the pharmaceutical industry: separating enantiomers.
The Problem: Many drugs exist in two mirror-image (chiral) versions, but only one is effective. The other is useless or harmful.
The Solution: We study how to use polarized light to apply radiation pressure and "push" the two enantiomers with slightly different forces, allowing us to separate them spatially.
This optical technique, currently being tested for chiral nanoparticles, is developed within the EIC Pathfinder CHIRALFORCE project (https://lnkd.in/drQ5Xe3V), led by Alejandro Martínez, and has the potential to revolutionize the safety of medicine.
A big step for applied physics in global health.
