The Call of Discipleship | Called, Empowered, and Sent

Описание: In this message from Gospel of Matthew 10:1–15, we explore Jesus’ commissioning of the twelve apostles and what their calling teaches us about our own. Just as soldiers receive deployment orders, the disciples were summoned by Jesus, empowered with His authority, and sent on a specific mission to “the lost sheep of the house of Israel.”

This passage marks a key moment in Jesus’ ministry. The King had come, the Kingdom was near, and the offer was being extended to Israel. Though this was a unique, time-bound assignment, the pattern still speaks to us today.

First, they were called. Before they were sent, they were summoned to Jesus. In the same way, our first calling is not to serve—but to come. We are called to belong to Christ before we are sent out for Christ.

Second, they were empowered. Jesus gave them authority to do what they could never do on their own. As believers today, we are empowered by the Holy Spirit (Acts of the Apostles 1:8) to be witnesses to the risen Christ. God doesn’t call the qualified—He qualifies the called.

Third, they were unique. From bold Peter to skeptical Thomas, from fiery Simon the Zealot to the quiet and unknown apostles, Jesus chose a diverse group of imperfect men. Their differences did not disqualify them. In fact, their uniqueness displayed the transforming power of Christ. The same is true for us—your personality, background, strengths, and weaknesses are not obstacles to God’s mission.

Finally, they were told to go. While their commission was to Israel, our commission is found in Gospel of Matthew 28:18–20—the Great Commission. We are sent to make disciples of all nations. Some will receive the message; others will reject it. Our responsibility is faithfulness. The results belong to God.

When we truly meet Jesus face to face, everything changes. Comfort fades. Ambition shifts. The mission becomes clear: follow Him and make Him known.

The same Jesus who called the twelve still calls us today.
