What is the key motivating spirit behind the medium of anime? Does this spirit harbour some sort of hostility to reality? To what extent do fans of anime embody characteristics that help to explain the underlying nature of more mainstream media consumers?
These questions are explored in relation to the concept of metamorphosis going right back through history to the ancient Roman classical work, Ovid’s “Metamorphoses”. Ovid’s work is examined in order to compare and contrast it with the contemporary phenomenon of Otaku - the Japanese subculture of deeply committed and expert consumers of anime and manga.
This video’s analysis of the concept of metamorphosis will provide useful context for forthcoming videos and livestream discussion of Kafka’s novella “The Metamorphosis”.
