THE ORGAN OF CAIRD HALL, DUNDEE, SCOTLAND
HARRISON & HARRISON, DURHAN 1923
REBUILT 1992
The organ was the first concert organ built by the Durham firm of Harrison & Harrison. It has 50 speaking stops and was installed in 1923.
The blind organist, Alfred Hollins was the advisor and consultant for the design of the organ and he gave the opening recital on 27th June 1923.
The organ was completely restored in 1991-92 by Harrison & Harrison and the pitch of the instrument was sharpened to make the organ playable with the visiting orchestras.
The exhaust pneumatic action has been restored in its entirety, and the original adjustable pistons, one on each division except the Orchestral,
which had two, allow for the pneumatic piston action to be fitted with an electronic memory.
The combination pedals have been removed and replaced with toe pistons. The Swell to Orchestral coupler was added in the rebuild.
Dundee City Council are delighted that part of Dundee’s cultural heritage has been restored for future generations.
