The April CO Research Trust lecture was a takeover by Dr Mari Herigstad and the Sheffield Hallam Research Group as they shared insights from their current projects investigating low-level CO exposure.
Carbon monoxide (CO) is a toxic gas that is known to be harmful to health. Studies show that the brain is especially vulnerable to CO, and that exposures can lead to cognitive and neuropsychiatric problems as well as potentially contribute to diseases such as stroke and dementia. Furthermore, the vulnerability to CO is not set but rather changes with age; the embryo, for example, is particularly at risk with low-level CO exposures linked to birth defects.
The Sheffield Hallam Research Group has been conducting groundbreaking research using a variety of methods, including cell studies, animal models, and human experiments. Their programmes provide an in-depth look at how CO exposure influences neurological health and contributes to disease development.
The lecture highlighted their latest discoveries and explored the broader implications for public health and safety.
