“we believe we are so inured from war, only the Middle East has wars”
Robert Fisk (1946–2020) was a foreign correspondent based in Beirut for decades, reporting for The Independent on the wars and upheavals that shaped the region, from the Lebanese Civil War and the Soviet invasion of Afghanistan to the conflicts in Iraq and the conflicts in Iraq and the dispossession of the Palestinians. He won the British Press Awards Journalist of the Year prize seven times, and his book The Great War for Civilisation remains one of the more substantial accounts of the region produced by a Western journalist.
In December 2015, ahead of a sold-out lecture at De Roma in Antwerp, the Belgian magazine MO* sat down with Fisk for an extended interview. In this excerpt, he argues that Western societies are structurally incapable of understanding the Middle East because they have no direct experience of war on their own soil. He draws a precise historical distinction: no North Korean ever struck London because of Korea, no Viet Cong ever reached Washington because of Vietnam. The Middle East, he contends, no longer offers the same insulation and yet Western governments still cannot perceive the asymmetry they have built and perpetuated.
