What could one possibly say about Jaidev's music that has not been said before? What indeed could one say about the magic that he created in Muzaffar Ali's debut film? (in 1978, when he was 34; it also happened to be Farooq Sheikh's second film, after Garam Hawa, if I am not mistaken)
I don't think I have ever heard anything else by Hirabai Mishra that I remember, other than in this movie, but this is reason enough to seek her out. IMDB credits her as also playing Lalluram's mother. Lalluram is played by Jalal Agha but I will now have to revisit the film to refresh my clearly fading memory about her.
The song appears in the beginning, middle and end of the film and I can't offhand think of a thumri used better in a film, to my mind the finest ever on internal migration, made at a time when the concerns of rural India were not yet invisibilised in Bombay cinema.
I definitely think this film version is what made me seek out the greats who had sung it before, from Siddheshwari Devi, Rasoolan Bai to... well, none other than the reclusive Anjanibai Malpekar, caught on camera giving taaliim to Begum Akhtar that I was introduced to by the ever excellent Rajan Parrikar and his generosity.
