A Polyrhythmic Rudimental Challenge You’ll Love! Part 2: Orchestrations!

In this week’s Drums By Liz lesson, I break down a powerful way to use your rudimental foundation to tackle a more advanced rudimental–polyrhythmic idea.

We begin with a right-lead paradiddle on beat 1, then move immediately into four left-lead Swiss triplets starting on beat 2. Because we’re dividing 16th-note space into groups of three, this creates a beautiful polyrhythmic feel that pushes your timing, strengthens your coordination, and elevates your overall musical control. It’s a challenge, but one that will truly empower and inspire your playing.

As I explored this idea, I realized just how far-reaching it is. It inspired me to think outside the box and develop even more creative approaches.

This week we are moving the right hand within the pattern. And please understand that I misspoke slightly in the video. We are not using flam accents, we are using Swiss triplets. The sticking pattern is 4 left lead Swiss triplets (rLLR) after a right lead Paradiddle.
So..RLRR LLRL LRLL RLLR.
Begin by finding beat 4 and pulling off quickly for the last sticking pattern as you orchestrate your rights to the high tom and the floor tom. The right hand will move on the E of 4 and the A of 4.
The second way is to start the orchestration by moving the rights just prior to the flams starting on the & of beat 2. We have options here and many ways to orchestrate those right hands. I started by moving them to tom toms. After that, I explored putting those rights on various cymbals. What happened as an impromptu thing worked nicer than I thought…lol. As you put those rights on any cymbals of choice, tag along your bass drum. This adds more impact to those cymbal notes. Try to explore more possibilities more orchestrations because it really is endless. I hope what I explore and share serves as a catalyst that helps propel your drumming to the next level!

Towards the end of the video, I started to move the left hands. Use your ride cymbal to open up/free up the left hand to move easily to tom toms or cymbals.

I’d still like to explore more possibilities with this idea. I truly appreciate the feedback… It helps me know whether to continue developing this concept or shift in a new direction.
