London had a SECRET Temporary Night Bus? The 766 Explained - Aldgate to Shadwell with just 6 stops!

The 766 stopped at St Boltoph Street (Aldgate), Aldgate Bus Station, Tower Hill (Tower Gateway Station), St Katherine Dock, Wellclose Street and Tobacco Dock (Shadwell). The 766 was introduced to replace night route N551. The N551 was diverted due to roadworks, unable to serve stops in Wapping and Shadwell.

As mentioned earlier, the 766 was a temporary route, and only ran for 12 nights. The service operated on the 13-16th, 20-23rd and 27-29th of January. Stagecoach operated the 766 from Ash Grove (HK) garage. Despite running in the central London Congestion Charge zone, The 766 was allocated diesel single deckers (ADL Enviro200 MMCs). These are allocated to route 394 (Islington, Tolpuddle Street to Homerton Hospital).

The 766 is the sixth temporary TfL bus route to be numbered in the 700 series. Routes 700, 718 and 759 have run in the past to cover for diverted routes. With routes 718, 719 and 733 being long-term rail replacement buses. The most recent 700 series route to be introduced was the 700, Which ran between Colliers Wood and the Phipps Bridge Estate. The 700 replaced route 200 during a diversion, and operated in Summer 2025. Unlike most 700 series routes, no publicity was produced for the 766. With bus stops empty of 766 tiles and printed timetables.
