The stems of Chicago Cold Hardy Figs can survive down to 10 degrees Fahrenheit. The roots can survive temperatures down to -20 degrees Fahrenheit. I started out last spring with a very small fig plant and ended up with it reaching almost 5 feet in height. I wanted to try to protect it from the cold, since weather forecasters were predicting temperatures below 10 degrees Fahrenheit. I decided to use one of my 5 foot tall tomatoes cages to place over the fig tree. Then I stuffed wheat straw in the cage around the plant, to insulate it. Since this is something I've never tried before, we won't know how well it works until next spring. Last winter, I was able to get the stems to survive a brutal February, when we got down to -17 Fahrenheit. The plant was small then, and I just piled straw and leaves over and around it.
