JNU Protests Erupt After Supreme Court Denies Bail to Umar Khalid
New Delhi: Protests broke out at Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) on Monday following the Supreme Court’s decision to reject bail pleas filed by activists and university alumni Umar Khalid in connection with the 2020 Delhi riots conspiracy case.
The apex court cited the alleged roles of Khalid and Imam in the “planning, mobilisation and strategic direction” of the February 2020 riots, placing them on a “qualitatively different footing” from other accused. While denying them bail, the court granted relief to five co-accused — Gulfisha Fatima, Meeran Haider, Shifa Ur Rehman, Mohd Saleem Khan and Shadab Ahmad — citing a “hierarchy of participation”.
Videos of the JNU protest circulated widely on social media, with some clips purportedly showing objectionable slogans being raised against Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Union Home Minister Amit Shah and industrialist Gautam Adani. The slogans sparked political outrage and renewed debate over campus activism.
The protests coincided with the sixth anniversary of the January 5, 2020 violence at the JNU campus, when masked assailants attacked students and teachers. Marking the anniversary, the university described the incident as a “brutal attack” and alleged that those responsible remain unidentified even years later.
A bench comprising Justices Aravind Kumar and N V Anjaria, however, allowed Khalid and Imam the liberty to file fresh bail applications either after the examination of protected witnesses or one year from the date of the order.
The February 2020 riots in northeast Delhi erupted amid protests against the Citizenship (Amendment) Act (CAA) and the proposed National Register of Citizens (NRC), resulting in at least 53 deaths and over 700 injuries.
Khalid, who has been in custody since 2020, recently returned to public discourse after New York City’s newly sworn-in mayor Zohran Mamdani reportedly sent him a handwritten note expressing empathy.
