Ragtime Aperitif Recital by Michael Maxwell Steer at the Savile Club, July 2023
Clarence Woods (1888-1956) was raised in Kansas, Missouri, a hotbed of ragtime. His father was a blacksmith but Woods took music lessons and became a vaudeville pianist and, later, silent movie accompanist. Slippery Elm Rag (©1912) is one of a handful of his compositions that are known, some of which only survived as piano roll transcriptions. Woods’ style has been called ‘folk ragtime’ and ‘tinged by the blues’. Little is known of him after 1925, except that he became music director of Barnum and Bailey Circus in the 1940s, performing on organ and calliope.
