This video show one solid wood chairs how to make it
1. Design (The Digital Blueprint)
This is the most critical step.
Software: Use 3D CAD software like Fusion 360, Rhino 3D, or SolidWorks.
The Task: You must create a complete 3D model of your entire chair.
Seat & Backrest: Often designed as a single, flowing, organic shape.
Legs: Can be part of the same solid block or designed as separate components to be attached.
Consider "Tool Access": As you design, you must think about how the physical cutting tool will reach every surface. Avoid deep, narrow cavities the tool cannot fit into.
2. CAM Programming (Telling the Machine How to Make It)
Software: Use the CAM module in your CAD software or a dedicated CAM program.
The Tasks:
Import 3D Model: Bring your chair design into the CAM software.
Orientation: Position the digital wood block in the virtual machine.
Toolpath Strategy: This is the key. You will use a sequence of operations:
Roughing: Use a large, sturdy tool to quickly remove the bulk of the waste material, getting within a few millimeters of the final shape. This is done with fast, efficient paths.
Semi-Finishing: A medium tool follows up to remove more material and get closer to the final shape.
Finishing: A smaller ball-nose tool makes fine, slow passes to create the final, smooth surface. 5-axis finishing is crucial for complex curves as the head can tilt to maintain the optimal cutting angle.
Generate G-code: The software translates all these actions into a language (G-code) the CNC machine understands.
Machine Setup
Workholding: This is paramount. You must secure the heavy wood blank incredibly firmly to the CNC table to withstand the forces of 5-axis machining.
Methods: Use a vacuum table (most common for panels) or screw the blank down from the bottom into sacrificial material underneath.
Tool Setup: Load the required tools (roughing end mill, finishing ball-nose) into the machine's tool changer.
Zeroing: Set the machine's X, Y, and Z zero points on your workpiece.
Machining
Run the Program: Start the job. The process is largely automated but requires monitoring.
The 5-Axis Magic: Watch as the machine's head tilts and rotates, allowing the tool to approach the wood from any angle to create the compound curves of the seat and backrest in a single setup.
Key Safety Note: 5-axis machining can generate significant torque on the workpiece. Ensure your workholding is absolutely secure.
6. Post-Processing (The Handwork)
The part will not be ready straight off the machine.
Detach the Part: Carefully remove the sculpted chair from the machine bed. There will likely be small "tabs" or sections left connecting it to the waste material that need to be cut through.
Sanding: This is a significant amount of work. You must sand the entire chair to remove any tiny tool marks (cusp marks) left from the CNC process, especially in hard-to-reach areas.
Finishing: Apply your chosen finish—oil, lacquer, varnish—by hand to protect the wood and bring out its beauty.
