Is the Nativity story in the Gospels historically reliable, or is it a theological invention? In this episode, renowned New Testament scholar N.T. Wright and theologian Mike Bird tackle the tough historical questions raised by historian and podcaster Tom Holland (The Rest Is History) regarding the birth of Jesus,. While Tom Holland is deeply sympathetic to the Christian revolution and its impact on Western civilization, he—like many secular historians—questions the timeline of the Christmas narrative found in the Gospel of Luke,.
The Historical Problem: Quirinius vs. Herod The central objection addressed in this video is the apparent chronological error in the Bible. Skeptics point out that Herod the Great died in 4 BC, yet the Governor Quirinius (mentioned in Luke 2) did not conduct his famous census until 6 AD—a gap of ten years. Did Luke invent a census to get Joseph and Mary to Bethlehem?
N.T. Wright’s Solution: The Greek Translation N.T. Wright offers a compelling linguistic solution to this contradiction based on the original Greek text of Luke 2:2. He argues that the Greek word protos can be translated as "before," meaning the verse should read: "This census was before the time when Quirinius was governor of Syria". Wright suggests Luke was well aware of the later, violent census under Quirinius and was distinguishing this earlier event from it.
Was the "Slaughter of the Innocents" Real? We also discuss the lack of secular evidence for Herod killing the babies in Bethlehem. Mike Bird and N.T. Wright explain that while we lack external records, this act fits perfectly with the psychological profile of Herod, a paranoid tyrant who murdered his own wives and sons to protect his throne. We even share the famous Roman joke from antiquity: "It is better to be Herod's pig (hus) than his son (huios)".
Prophecy and Archaeology Finally, we look at whether the Bethlehem narrative was fabricated to fulfill the prophecy in Micah. Mike Bird argues that Micah was not the primary messianic text of the time, making it unlikely that the early Christians would invent a story just to fit it,. We also discuss how archaeology, such as the discovery of the Gallio inscription, has frequently proven the New Testament correct after years of skepticism,.
