The summer anime season is here, and we are starting off with this banger for DAN DA DAN Season 2! It was always going to be hard following up the fan favourite that was Creepy Nut's Otonoke from last year, but dare I say I like this one better. AiNA THE END is a new artist to me and she has definitely delivered the 'quirky' vibe DAN DA DAN needs.

The challenge of arranging these kinds of songs for solo piano is imitating the vocal inflections and non melodic sections of the song. I love that AiNA also managed to sneak in the actual words 'DAN DA DAN' into her OP as well, I guess this is going to be a requirement going forward for the series. The verse sections have a very open texture, mostly a low bass line carrying the accompaniment. The prechorus section is sung in octaves as harmony, but with the lower voice leading, I end up doubling this in both hands during the second repeat at 1:53. I also tried to come up with a 'melodic' line that follows the inflections of the original rap/spoken parts...I think it turned out alright! Finally, the main groove of the chorus is hard to beat, definitely been stuck in my head already, the descending chromatic lines (e.g. 1:19) are my favourite part. I also switched it up by adding a mini breakdown section when we return to the final chorus just for some variation.
