Ningbo was one of the most principal areas of Wu Chinese migration to Shanghai, much of the Shanghainese population is descended from migrants from Ningbo. Very few people in Shanghai are descendants of the inhabitants of the original walled city of Shanghai. Ningbo dialect, a close relative of Shanghainese, heavily influenced the Songjiang dialect that was spoken in Shanghai during the Ming and Qing dynasties. Over time, the process accelerated during and after the Taiping rebellion.
