Watch Making The Argument with Nick Freitas weekdays Mon - Fri:‪ @Nickjfreitas‬

Why are more Americans cutting off family members over politics, and when did going “no contact” with parents, siblings, and relatives become so common? Nick Freitas examines the rise of family estrangement in America and the cultural forces that may be turning ordinary political disagreements into reasons to end relationships with the people closest to us.

Nick looks at research on political polarization and family estrangement, including data suggesting Gen Z and millennials are particularly likely to sever relationships over political disagreements. He also explores why political differences can increasingly be viewed as questions of personal safety, morality, identity, and mental health rather than disagreements between people who still love one another.

The conversation then turns to social media and “no contact” culture. Nick discusses how viral stories about “toxic parents,” boundaries, narcissism, trauma, and protecting your mental health can normalize family estrangement online. He argues that social media can even turn cutting off family into a form of social currency, where being the victim of a “toxic” relationship while having the power to end it is portrayed as empowering.

Nick also examines the influence of therapy culture, mental health rhetoric, political ideology, and changing attitudes toward family relationships. Are Americans being encouraged to treat family members as enemies when they disagree politically? Is cutting off your parents actually good for your mental health? And what happens to society when politics becomes more important than maintaining relationships with our own families?

This discussion explores family estrangement, political division, political polarization, no-contact culture, toxic family relationships, social media, therapy culture, mental health, Gen Z, millennials, parents and adult children, conservative families, liberal politics, and the breakdown of the American family.
