I feel like respect is truly earned from people and so is the benefit of the doubt. By constantly forgiving and being nice to toxic people you are (in their minds) giving them the go ahead to treat you the same or worse than they have been treating you. I'm not saying that people don't deserve kindness, i'm saying that you should make them earn it in some way.

I have narcissistic personality disorder ( #NPD ) and I've been in therapy for my personality disorder since 2017 and it has definitely changed my life because without it, I would have lost everything.
