The Supreme Court now recognises passive euthanasia, saying people have a right to die with dignity. The verdict means that those who are terminally ill or in incurable comas can legally be taken off life support. It will only apply to those who have no hopes of recovery, five judges said.
Individuals who want to opt out of artificial life support would need to create a “living will.” This living will has to be made when a person is “in his normal state of health and mind.” In cases where there is no “advance directive,” the patient’s family or next friend can approach a high court. Active euthanasia, which occurs while administering lethal injection, is still illegal.
