Imagine this: You’re behind the wheel of a rugged Soviet dump truck — a machine that’s more than half a century old yet still working hard. It’s not a passenger car, but it drives easier than you might think thanks to its hydraulic booster, which not only assists steering but also softens suspension impacts. Meet the ZIL MMZ-4502, a short-base dump truck built on the legendary ZIL-130 chassis. Produced at the Mytishchi Machine-Building Plant, it was designed to be a reliable, heavy-duty workhorse for agriculture, construction, and industry. The base ZIL-130 was shortened to 130 inches and fitted with a purpose-built dump bed, creating a vehicle that could handle loads from 5.5 to over 7 tons — more than its own curb weight of 7,550 kg.

The twist? While inspired by American trucks like the Ford F-600 and Studebaker, the ZIL was fully adapted to Soviet conditions — stronger suspension, simpler maintenance, and unmatched durability on rough roads. From 1964 onward, it became one of the USSR’s most iconic trucks, serving for decades in both civilian and military roles.

Under the hood, the MMZ-4502 in this video packs a 5.9L ZIL-130 gasoline V8 producing 150 hp at 3,200 rpm and 402 Nm of torque at just 2,000 rpm. Paired with a 5-speed transmission, it’s no speed demon (top speed around 50 mph), but with a 10.6-inch ground clearance and massive leaf springs, it can crawl through deep mud and rough fields without complaint.

The dump bed is pure utility — 1,000 gallons standard volume, expandable to 1,350 gallons with side extensions. Hydraulic tipping lifts a fully loaded bed (over 4 tons) in just 15 seconds, powered by a PTO-driven pump and robust cylinder system.

Inside, the cab is spacious for three adults, with panoramic glass, a familiar ZIL dashboard, and controls built for hard work. It’s warm in winter, bright in daylight, and tough enough to survive decades of use. Drum brakes on all wheels, a simple frame design with five crossmembers, and hypoid final drives make maintenance straightforward even in remote areas.

While ZIL production ended years ago, trucks like this MMZ-4502 keep the brand’s spirit alive — proof that in an age of overcomplicated machinery, sometimes the simplest solutions last the longest.
