In this story we react to the story of The leaders of Kingdom of God Global Church, which are accused of soliciting donations in four states including Missouri, are facing up to 60 years in prison for alleged roles in a forced labor and money laundering conspiracy. A federal grand jury in Michigan returned a 10-count indictment against David Taylor and Michelle Brannon on Wednesday.
The group is also accused of using five properties in St. Louis for these crimes, including one previously owned by Nelly.
The organization has received about $50 million in donations since 2014, according to the indictment. FBI offices in Michigan, Florida, Texas and Missouri investigated the case, said Reuben Coleman, Acting Special Agent in Charge of the FBI Detroit Field Office.
“The indictment of David Taylor and Michelle Brannon demonstrates the FBI’s steadfast efforts to protect the American people from human exploitation and financial crimes, including forced labor and money laundering,” Coleman said. “The alleged actions are deeply troubling.”
Taylor, called the organization leader in the indictment, is seen on a billboard near St. Louis Lambert International Airport. He’s seen holding crutches against a background of wheelchairs, advertising an apparent healing ability.
“Taylor calls himself Apostle and Jesus's best friend,” the indictment reads. “He claims he has had multiple face-to-face encounters with God and that God has given him the keys to the Kingdom on Earth.”
Taylor recruited unpaid call center employees from across the country, receiving millions in donations annually according to the indictment. The workers also transported women to and from Taylor’s location, ensuring the women took emergency contraceptives. It’s also alleged Taylor physically and emotionally punished workers and claimed those who defied his orders were “defying God and will suffer in Hell.”
A majority of call centers were in Missouri homes, with five locations across St. Louis County. A Wildwood home once owned by legendary St. Louis rapper Nelly, according to realtor.com, is among them. The home was purchased in 2021 but and was in need of extensive repairs at the time.
Nearly $700,000 in donations was spent on luxury items, including cars, jet skis, crab legs and bulletproof vehicle equipment. Once convicted, the pair would be forced to forfeit real estate and other property acquired through donations. They also face fines, up to 20 years in prison for conspiracy to commit forced labor, an additional max sentence of 20 years for forced labor and up to 20 years’ imprisonment for conspiracy to commit money laundering.
