You may be curious or wondering why gel is used during scans like ultrasounds or echocardiograms and what its purpose actually is. We’re here to explain it in the simplest way.
It’s actually a specialised, water-based conductive gel (often called ultrasound gel or ECG gel). During the scan, a probe (a small handheld device called a transducer) is gently pressed against the gelled area of your skin. The gel helps the probe make proper contact with your skin. This removes tiny air gaps between the probe and the skin, which can otherwise block sound waves and affect the scan.
Without the gel, the sound waves would scatter, making it difficult to get a proper reading. By filling those gaps, the gel allows sound waves to travel smoothly, helping the radiologist capture clear, accurate images. The gel is usually slightly cool in temperature, which is completely normal. This helps it spread evenly and improves the quality of the scan.
At Ace Ved Diagnostics, we use a 90% water-based gel that is gentle, safe, and comfortable for all skin types. For most people, this gel is completely safe and does not cause any reaction. It’s designed to be skin-friendly and non-irritating. However, if you have very sensitive skin, known allergies, or have reacted to products in the past, you can always check the gel ingredients or inform the radiologist beforehand so extra care can be taken.
