Buoyancy varies depending on your body composition, the distance between your center of buoyancy (lungs and central body fat) and your center of mass, and the density of the type of water you are in salt vs fresh. Your center of gravity naturally wants to float on the surface above your center of mass, causing a motionless swimmers legs to drop, and the lungs to rise, tilting them vertically under gravity. The volume of air in your lungs and the density of the water, salt versus fresh plays a role too, with salt water and degrees of it, improving buoyancy. If your swimming events involve being in one medium over the other, it’s important your training replicates those training environments to prepare yourself for the changes in buoyancy and body position. How long can you lay flat and motionless on the surface of freshwater vs salt??
