Senior Pasture and Range Consultant for the Noble Foundation, Chuck Coffey, discusses work he has done examining rainfall and drought patterns in the Southern Great Plains -- particularly in Oklahoma. Throughout most of the 1980s and 1990s, Oklahoma received rainfall that was well above the long-term average for the state. Coffey says that ranchers began to base forage production estimates and stocking rates on these higher than average precipitation levels. Agricultural producers began to think of these wet years as "the new normal." Coffey uses charts and statistics to show that the drought of 2011 and 2012 may not have been an anomaly -- that drought is to be expected in Oklahoma more than 20 percent of the time. He cautions ranchers to take steps to prepare for more dry years ahead as state rainfall trends swing back closer to their long-term averages.
Coffey's March 14, 2013 talk was given at the Texoma Cattlemen's Conference in Ardmore, Okla. The annual conference is produced by the Samuel Roberts Noble Foundation.
