The song was written by John Lennon and Paul McCartney and became the second track on the Beatles’ 1967 album “Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band” with Ringo Starr singing the lead vocals. While the original version was an upbeat pop melody, English singer Joe Cocker did a radical re-arrangement as a hard rock, soulful version for his 1968 album by the same title. Cocker’s recording reached No.1 on the UK singles chart in November 1968. It was barely noticed in the US until the 1970 documentary film “Woodstock” was released to theaters worldwide, and Joe Cocker’s stunning performance of the song at that 1969 concert became a pivotal moment for his career. It should be noted that Jimmy Page played guitar in the studio recording with fabulous drumming by B.J. Wilson of Procol Harum.
