One of the companies that was given a contract by the US government to build the magnetron was Raytheon and one of the engineers working for Raytheon was a self-taught engineer from Howland, Maine - Percy Spencer. He was then one of the world's leading experts in radar tube design. In 1945, he was working on a powerful radar device when he noticed that a chocolate bar in his pocket was melting. He was not the first to notice such a phenomenon but he was the first to become interested in it. He exposed popcorn to microwaves and it popped, he tried whole eggs and they exploded. He then attached a high-density electromagnetic field generator to a sealed metal box and experimented on food in a way that allowed for controlled and safe experiments.
