Five years ago, because of Denis' departure, Anna was in terrible condition, taking antidepressants, which made her walk in a somnambulistic fog and eventually got hit by a car. Vera is shocked, but this is still not the whole truth. The second part is no less stunning - all these five years Denis has been financially supporting his ex-wife; she is a great economist, who once helped set up Denis' business, still advises him and does analytical work at home. Vera is shaken. For five years, her husband has been hiding his strong connection with his ex-wife from her. And even though this connection is purely friendly, Vera knew nothing about it. So, Denis may (and does!) have his own life separate from hers.
