USAID Ethiopia Mission Director Sean Jones announced that the U.S. is joining the Government of Ethiopia and development partners to launch the next five-year phase of the Productive Safety Net Program (PSNP) -- the Ethiopian government's multi-billion dollar food security, public works, and social safety net program for millions in need across the country. The PSNP was first established with U.S. support in 2005. As the largest donor, USAID’s investments account for over $550 million over the next five years.
Transcript:
On behalf of USAID and the American people I am pleased to announce a five-year extension of the highly successful and country-wide Productive Safety Net Program, or PSNP.
Over the next five years, the United States will invest over $550 million USD in PSNP to help 9 million Ethiopians strengthen their resilience to shocks and lift themselves out of poverty. We will continue to work hand-in-hand with our Ethiopian government and other partners on this program as we improve food security, nutrition, and the overall well-being of millions of vulnerable Ethiopians.
We applaud the Ethiopian government’s commitment, leadership, and increased ownership under this initiative. The American people greatly appreciate the opportunity to be a partner of the Ethiopian people in the coming years.
