Translating the sub song (片尾曲) "Drunk World" (醉红尘) from The Young Heroes of Shaolin 1981 (英雄出少年) into English.
Original Cantonese Song by Michael Kwan (關正傑).
The "Young Heroes of Shaolin" or "Ying Hung Chut Siu Nin" as it was known during its release in 1981 is a very entertaining and light hearted series. It is very family friendly, despite covering one of the darkest periods in Shaolin history where the Southern temple was attacked and burnt to the ground.
The series stars Shek Sau (石修) as the folk hero, Hong Xiguan (洪熙官). He is a historical figure who lived from 1745-1825 during the Qing Dynasty. Being of Han descent he is said to have been part of the Heaven and Earth society which was formed to overthrow the Qing government. I enjoyed Shek Sau's performance in the role and his martial arts scenes looked really good during this series. But the stellar performance belonged to Stephen Tung (董瑋) who played Fang Shiyu (方世玉) another Chinese folk hero. His martial arts was spot on and I enjoyed his acting in this series.
A young Michael Miu (苗僑偉) was finally given a prominent role which he shined in. The performance he put in this series as a tragic hero paved way for him to land the role of Yang Kang in the Legend of the Condor Heroes 1983 which shot him to stardom. Like Michael Miu, a young Felix Wong (黃日華) also landed his first major role in the series. Felix played the role of the Qianlong Emperor (乾隆帝). Here Felix showed he had the talents to be a big star. He and Michael Miu would form a very long and lasting friendship from this series.
A special mention goes to Andy Lau (劉德華) who was in the cast as a Shaolin student extra. He featured in the background of many scenes and spoke a few lines. He always had a beaming smile on his face like he couldn't believe he was in a TV series. I wonder whether he knew at this point in his career that he'd go on to become one of the biggest stars in Asian entertainment... How big things come from such humble origins.
The female cast included Susanna Au Yeung (歐陽佩珊) and Cecilia Wong (黃杏秀). Whilst I enjoyed both performances, I was taken by the beauty of Cecilia Wong in this series. This was the first time I've ever seen her in a series, so I became an instant fan. Here she played Fang Qiniang (方七娘) who is another Chinese folk hero. She is credited as the founder of the Fujian White Crane fighting style that still exists to this day.
If you haven't seen this series, I highly recommend it. The story has been retold a number of times but this series remains a classic because of the well choreographed fight scenes and the timeless acting. The cast is also stellar.
The sub song "Drunk World" is sung by Michael Kwan also. I think it is a copy of an old folk song as I have heard it before or something that sounds similar. Anyway, enjoy...
