The year 2013 saw the beginning of China's biggest ambitions on the world trade map. President Xi Jinping announced a giant project that would change the course of the global economy: The Belt and Road Initiative (BRI). This project, often referred to as the New Silk Road, aims to build a network of land and sea routes connecting Asia, Europe and Africa. In fact, China has big plans to penetrate Arctic trade routes in the future. The BRI project has raised nearly $1 trillion in investment and created more than 3,000 projects that are targeted for completion by 2049.
Behind the splendor of this project, however, are simmering geopolitical tensions. Despite the support of more than 150 countries, representing two-thirds of the global population and 40% of global GDP, India has not.
