The Lens of Yashu is implementing this new idea, inspired by the Drea O Show, a Chicago-based journalist and content creator, who works for Complex and has implemented a roundtable discussion on her platform, where she interviewed the mothers of Chicago drill rappers and youths who have died from gun violence in their city. Lasheena Weekly, the mother of Chicago rapper FBG Duck, also spoke about the effects of gun violence and how it has affected her in that interview and another interview by VladTV. The mothers also discuss how other youth and young adults make fun of their deceased sons/daughters in reference to “smoking on them” and relating that to smoking cannabis, and how it affects their legacy of how they want to be portrayed as.
For the Lens of Yashu roundtable, Joshua (@lensofyashu) wants to follow with that same idea but providing a discussion by having a roundtable discussion with the mothers, fathers, siblings, and guardians of Toronto/GTA rappers and non-musicians, but to discuss the harms about gun violence, the effects it has on the family and the role of the family, how street politics is a problem, and a call to demand peace and a truce to end the violence and politics.
History, Idea, and Purpose of the Roundtable:
The Lens of Yashu notice the recent gun violence, street deaths, and politics that have been rampant in destroying families, communities, and ways of peace since 2018. Joshua feels that establishing a truce should be made properly but the role of the family has been ignored for a very long time, in terms of the end of generation to generation, passing down family traditions and legacies, and the sense of allowing the son/daughter to take over and provide for the family once the mother/father/guardian passes away.
Joshua feels that society and mainstream media tends to ignore the responses that truly matter, the mother/father/guardian or siblings who have either lost their son or daughter to gun violence/stabbings and mainstream media tends to ignore their responses when the families have lost their child for a year, two years, etc, and only care when it happens when they die at that time. We don’t look at their thoughts on this or how it has affected them in a long time, or how they want the violence/politics to end and if peace is essential. By having that roundtable discussion and by giving them a voice on how they feel and how they want their son/daughter to be portrayed as, by them, it might make some sense for a truce to happen or a sense of peace, if possible. It really doesn’t matter if the deceased are involved in crime or not, no person should lose their life and leave their family behind regardless.
Furthermore, the Lens of Yashu feels that many mainstream and indie Toronto media platforms (ex. CityNews, CP24, CTV, 6ixbuzz, We Love Hip Hop) doesn’t showcase this type of content and would not care to do this and just drop some interviews or commentary that sensationalizes the violence/politics that Toronto is facing.
