Cookeville takes a different path as property taxes rise across Tennessee

Описание: Property taxes have surged across much of Tennessee in recent years, with some communities seeing increases of 25 to 50 percent. In Davidson County, property taxes have climbed about 60 percent over the past five years.

But in Putnam County, leaders have taken a markedly different approach.

County property taxes in Putnam County have risen by about one percent a year for the past decade, a trend local officials say reflects a deliberate philosophy of restraint and careful spending.

That approach is evident in downtown Cookeville, where locally owned businesses dominate the streetscape and major national chains are limited. Shops like The Glass Tangerine, a gift and flower store owned by Emma Crabtree, draw steady foot traffic and reflect what business owners describe as a supportive, small-business-friendly environment.

Crabtree says downtown Cookeville benefits from residents who value local ownership and historic revitalization, rather than large-scale corporate development.
