Ryan Muldoon, Senior Economist with the Development Research Group of the World Bank, talks to Aurelia Figueroa, Researcher at the German Development Institute / Deutsches Institut für Entwicklungspolitik (DIE) about the "World Development Report 2015: Mind, Society, and Behavior" and answers the following questions:
(1) We know that there are three main principles that the report brings up: Thinking automatically, thinking with mental models, thinking socially. So, although we know that there are some heuristics that we, as humans, generally use. Do you think that this can be more broadly applied globally, or do you think they also require local contextualization?
(2) We can see that some heuristics, such as mental accounting, can have a bad effect, or they can have a positive effect, as well. You gave an example of lock-box, that has been used in Kenya to help people to increase savings. Would you say that most / many / all heuristics have this kind of two-sided approach, where they can, one the one side be bad, or on the other side, they can be positive?
(3) Some people may say that the report places too much of a burden on the citizens and consumers, but of course, the report does go to affords to illustrate on the chapters, so development professionals, as well, can make sure they can modify their own behavior. Could you elaborate on it?
