You wouldn’t think, on Cheltenham’s busy high street with its shops and buses and all that, that you were no distance at all from a large and significant piece of Mediaeval architecture. Because it’s been hidden away, and if you didn’t know it was there you might walk on by.
The only remaining Mediaeval building in Cheltenham, St Mary’s Minster has been a place of worship since the 8th century. There are references to a monastery here in the year 773, and a church was mentioned in the Domesday Book in 1086.
In 2013 the church was designated as Cheltenham Minster, meaning that it’s a local church of significance. The word is related to ‘monastery’ in the older sense, meaning an intentional community with a religious purpose.
