BATHROOMS AROUND THE WORLD - Know Before You Go.
Taking a bathroom break in different parts of the world are not always the same, that we are used to having in our neck of the woods.
Where ever you happen to be in the world, the culture that you have adopted when going to the washroom, lavatory, water closet, toilet or bathroom, can be a totally different experience for those who travel.
Did you know, that about 4 billion people in the world, do not use toilet paper. That represents approximately 70 - 75% of the population have other means of wiping themselves after going to the bathroom.
So if they don't use toilet paper, then what do they use instead?
When you are traveling throughout the world, you should be prepared for the customs that are common in that culture.
Many of the European countries, require a tip or payment to use the public facilities. Most of them will provide you with about 3 sheets of toilet paper, before you go into the washroom and after you have paid.
Asian countries tend to use holes in the ground with an indentation on either side to place your feet, while you squat. Then look for a bucket of water or hose to wash yourself down. Kind of like the original model for a bidet.
While in many of the African countries and Macedonian regions, although you may have access to toilet paper, they do not want you to flush this down the toilet, because of the possibility of blocking the pipes. Therefore there are waste bins available for you to dispose of your tissue after use.
China and Korea, do not always have a supply of toilet paper, therefore as a traveller to these countries you will need to bring your own supply.
Also note that many of the public washrooms do not have a place for you to wash your hands, and they certainly don't have access to a hand sanitizer receptacle. So this will definitely be another item you will want to have with you, at all times.
And then in North America, the infamous "Porta-potty" which is a portable potty system used at many outdoor venues for public use, which comes with it's own draw backs and practices to navigate yourself around.
Might not be a bad idea to also learn the lingo for what a bathroom is. Like in many European countries, like Italy, France, Portugal, the washroom is referred to as a "water closet - WC." In England they go to the "loo", in Spain its the "bano" , Australia you will be looking for the "dunny" and in Japan you will need to find the "ben-jo."
Wherever your travel plans take you, you will want to look into what their bathroom customs are, so that you are prepared and not caught off guard.
