Looking at history, consolation seems to be a basic human need. The Book of Job, the Psalms and the works of intellectuals as diverse as Marcus Aurelius, Karl Marx, Primo Levi or Cicely Saunders are all sources of hope for Michael Ignatieff.

Raised as the son of Russian immigrants in Toronto, historian and author Michael Ignatieff is one of the most important intellectuals in the Anglo-Saxon world. After a short career in Canadian politics, he became known to a wider public as rector of the Central European University, which had to move from Budapest to Vienna in 2021 for political reasons.

Olivia Röllin talks to Michael Ignatieff about faith in a secular society, the power of consolation and why one is sometimes inconsolable.
